A DIAMOND necklace and earrings worth half a million dollars was a fitting present for a Material Girl as Madonna celebrated her 50th birthday .

Madonna's film director husband Guy Ritchie reportedly splashed out on the specially-designed gifts from Bulgari as well as having a rose named after her.

After a rough few months in which the couple has fended off rumours that their eight-year marriage is on the rocks, Ritchie appears to have gone all out for her big day.

Some of the singer's other gifts were less appealing but one present sure to win her over was a dress designed by daughter Lourdes, 11. Madonna's big day was otherwise kept low-key.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the biggest star in the world, here is her birthday speech from The Confessions Tour in London two years ago.

Madonna — who turns 50 on Saturday — and Guy Ritchie separated in 2003 for a short time, according to British author Wendy Leigh. It was a bombshell that she left out of the bestseller she wrote with Christopher Ciccone, "Life With My Sister Madonna."

While we talked over breakfast on Thursday at a downtown hotel, Wendy told me the whole saga of how she and Madonna’s brother had come to be partnered on the book, and then she dropped this bombshell.

Madonna, she told me, had written many letters and e-mails to Christopher over the years. The latest was in 2003. "She detailed her marriage to Guy in a way that a woman usually doesn’t discuss her husband with her brother," Wendy told me.

"It showed a side of her that made her very human," Leigh said. "But think that this was so soon in the marriage. She was having grave doubts. But so was he. The separation was initiated by him."

The letters are only briefly mentioned in the book, Wendy said, because it’s illegal to quote from them. Even paraphrasing is tricky. But the gist of it is that Christopher was Madonna’s confidant as recently as 2003.

The separation came in February 2003, less than three years into the marriage and birth of their son, Rocco. According to Leigh, the couple went for "counseling." It’s unclear whether this meant Kabbalah or just regular shrink stuff.

"The numbre 50 is not a bad word, I feel fine as I am not sensitive about anyone tallking about it. I see it as another excuse to have a party. I´m enjoying life as much as ever, as well as all the different things I do directing, making music, having a family".

Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, says rumors that the Material Girl wants to adopt a little girl named Mercy from Malawi are false.

She states, "There is no truth to this rumor. It’s an old one - wasn’t true then or now. Madonna is starting her tour in a week."

The rep didn't say Madonna will never adopt again.

This is the orphan whom Malawian officials say pop goddess Madonna is "on the very cusp" of adopting.

Madge originally scrapped her year-long battle for three-year-old Mercy James just four months ago as her marriage to British film director Guy Ritchie, 39, hit the rocks.

But officials yesterday confirmed the star has resumed her adoption bid -- which pals say proves their marriage is "back on track".

Malawian adoption minister Penstone Kilembe said: "Madonna's representatives have been visiting the girl. The adoption is now advanced -- all the government is waiting for is Madonna to forward the petition of adoption formalities.

"Then Mercy will be able to leave the country for a new life."

Pals of Madonna, who turns 50 on Saturday, say she is keen to have a sister for her adopted Malawian son David Banda, three -- and feels her marriage is again strong enough to cope.

A close family friend revealed: "The adoption process in Malawi is so long and stressful that all the legal wrangling put a huge strain on their marriage.

"They dropped proceedings to pour all their energies into each other. But Madonna now feels they are stable enough to press ahead with the adoption again."

The friend said Madge "fell in love" with Mercy when they met at her orphanage last year.

However, the girl's gran Lucy Chekechiwa, 60, said she has been asked repeatedly by officials if Mercy could be adopted by an "unidentified foreign family" -- but was firmly against it.

Speaking from her village in Zomba District, Lucy said: "We know that it is Mercy who Madonna really wants. We heard it is because my granddaughter is such a beautiful, happy child.

"Twice I have told the adoption people that I do not want Mercy to go outside the country.

"But they keep on at us. Now they say that Mercy will be leaving us, but can return at age 18. Yet I might not be alive then."

The Sun revealed how Madge, who also has daughter Lourdes, 11, and son Rocco, eight, was given permission to adopt Mercy last August -- but had to stop when the girl's uncle John Nglanade, 36, blocked the application.

As Madonna gears up for her 50th birthday on Saturday, she's hit a bit of a stumbling block. Literally.

After spraining her left ankle the singer may have to postpone festivities.

She had planned to host a lavish do for around 50 select guests at her country estate in Wiltshire, but the Material Girl is now set to push back her party by nearly two weeks.

Guests will include officials from Malawi who helped with her adoption of David Banda.

We're told: "Plans are very hush-hush but Madonna is definitely going to celebrate her milestone in style.

"Unfortunately not everything has gone as expected as she's had many other things on her mind - not least rehearsals for her Sticky And Sweet tour. On top of all the stress of this, she twisted her ankle over the weekend. She views this as a sign that perhaps she should postpone the formal birthday bash and play it by ear instead.

"Madonna now reckons it'll go ahead during a three-day break in the tour towards the end of the month, not next weekend.

"Guy wants it to be traditional and British. He has already ordered crate-loads of real ales.

"He's also arranged for a folk band to play and the people invited are all pretty old school - Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney and Trudie Styler - basically friends Madonna's known for years.

"Everyone else will be immediate friends and family, plus a few people from Malawi that Madonna will be flying out. A few of her Kabbalah associates are also expected and Madonna's made sure that only Kabbalah water will be served."

The singer was pictured in New York at the weekend with a bandaged left ankle.

While the build-up to her birthday may not be ideal, she will be celebrating in part on Saturday.

After a small, family get-together, she is expected to hit the town for a few glasses of pink bubbly.

Let's hope she's got rid of the Tubigrip by then.
