Dedication to Pope in Rome

Madonna has courted controversy at a concert in Rome by dedicating her hit song Like A Virgin to the Pope.

"I dedicate this song to the Pope, because I'm a child of God," she told 60,000 fans in the Italian capital. "All of you are also children of God."

Two years ago, the 50-year-old was criticised by the Catholic Church for staging a mock crucifixion at a concert in the city's Olympic Stadium.

But Italian newspapers gave Saturday's concert warm reviews.

"At the Roman leg of her tour, Madonna didn't miss the opportunity for a provocation that will certainly be discussed," Corriere della Sera said on its front page.

Madonna has a long history of using religious imagery in her performances, with her 1989 video for the song Like A Prayer featuring burning crosses, statues crying blood and Madonna seducing a black Jesus.

AMAZING Madonna

A week after turning 50, when most of her peers would still be shaking off a hangover, the untiring pop star performed the first of 51 shows across Europe and America.

The tour promotes Madonna’s current album Hard Candy, which topped the charts when it was released in April.

She opened with two fast-paced tracks from it, making her entrance to Candy Shop on board a moving throne, legs spread open. Her voice sounded shaky as she strutted across the stage in a Givenchy-designed one-piece, fishnets and knee high boots.

Establishing the gangsta-pimp theme of the first quarter of the show, a cane-wielding Madonna was joined on stage by dancers in raunchy bondage–style costumes.

The “Old School” phase of the show was much more fun and Madonna seemed on surer ground. It kicked off with an energetic performance of Get Into The Groove with schoolyard skipping rope dance routine that hinted at how the muscular star maintains her remarkable physique.

Other re-workings of her old hits included a guitar-heavy rock version of Borderline and striking New York subway train visuals on the track Music.

There were times when Madonna seemed strained and she lacked the effortless confidence of previous years. In the opening half of the show, she struggled to involve the crowd, who responded half-heartedly to her newer tracks. Her voice was stronger when she wasn’t attempting to keep up with her dance troupe.

But the energy picked up during La Isla Bonita, when she skipped around the stage at the head of a procession of violin players. The pace continued with a high-energy, crowd-pleasing rendition of Hung-Up.

“Sticky & Sweet” is Madonna’s first world tour since she hit the road in 2006 with “Confessions” — the highest grossing tour by a female artist.

Two years later, Madonna’s biceps are no smaller and, with the news that 100 pairs of fishnet pantyhose have been procured from eBay for the artist, her costumes no less raunchy.

Ricardo Tisci of Givenchy, Stella McCartney and Roberto Cavalli are among the 36 designers who have contributed to the tour wardrobe.

With tickets for last night’s Cardiff gig costing between £65 and £160, it will be no surprise if this extravagant production by the world’s most successful female recording artist of all time goes on to break more records.

Stadium Prepares...

The final preparations are being made for the start of Madonna's 27-date world tour which kicks of at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

The pop icon's Sticky and Sweet tour takes in 16 European venues, including London's Wembley Stadium, before moving to North and South America.

The 40,000-seat first date is all but sold out with a 250-strong crew putting the finishing touches to the event.

Stadium manager Gerry Toms said: "They have been here for some time now."

Madonna's last tour was in 2006 and it became the highest-grossing by a female artist at the time.

The new tour promises 16 dancers, a 12 piece band and an array of designer costume changes for the star, who celebrated her 50th birthday last week.

Madonna and band have spent more than 650 hours rehearsing for the two-hour show which is broken into four sections.

The Pimp section is described as a "mashed-up homage" to 1920s deco and modern day gangsta pimp, in which Madonna will make an entrance dressed by Givenchy.

The Old School show section will see Madonna return to her early 80s downtown New York City dance roots and the birth of rap.

There will then be a Romanian folk music and dance-influenced Gypsy section, before the Rave element, which promises far eastern influences, emerging "all sparkly and sporty".

The show will bring its usual glamour, with a team of 36 different designers contributing to the stage costumes.

There are three racks of clothing for Madonna's stage wardrobe alone, with five assistants helping with the star's eight major costume changes.

It is the first time the venue has been picked to start a world tour and Mr Toms said it showed the venue had the confidence of the industry.

He said: "There's lot of work involved in a new tour. A new stage configuration and lighting has been be going on for the past couple of weeks.

"The benefit for us that we have a retractable roof, so we've been unhindered by the horrendous weather we've been having.

"They could have gone to anywhere in Europe buy they've got the confidence in Cardiff, not just the stadium, but Cardiff as a whole to deliver, we should take some strength from that."
