| Madge party magic | ||||||||||||||
Nicole Kidman was manning the door and helping to take guests’ coats and shawls.Sharon Stone was chowing down on onion bhajis, while Cameron Diaz was mopping up the vegetarian curry with naan bread.There was a definite Slumdog Millionaire theme at the late-night, post-Oscar party Madonna threw with Demi Moore at the mansion owned by Madge’s manager, Guy Oseary.Spread out in the kitchen were traditional Indian dishes including chicken tikka masala and various biriyanis.There were other goodies, too. One guest even jokingly (I hope) asked for a deep-fried Mars bar. I gather he had once spent a drunken night in Glasgow and claimed to have tasted the Scottish delicacy.Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was the DJ and MC. When best supporting actress Oscar winner Penelope Cruz sashayed in, he announced: ‘Penel-o-p-e Cruuuz is in the house!’Most people party-hopped from the Vanity Fair bash and Elton John’s charity event to end up at Madge’s, where the tennis courts had been covered over and topped with a marquee. Sofas and chairs were provided for the weary to rest themselves on.And there were plenty of mints in little bowls, for those who didn’t want early morning curry breath.

| Cindy Lauper applauds Mo | ||||||||||||||
At “Defying Inequality: the Broadway Concert for Equal Rights,” the other night, nubile young New York intern Ross Urken asked Cyndi Lauper what she thought about Madonna’s post-divorce flings with youthful boy toys like A-Rod and Jesus Luz, and Cyndi, who takes equal rights extremely seriously, set him straight. “What’s your issue?” she demanded. “You know how many old geezers do you see with young women. What’s the double standard? Who cares? You know, they’re both adults. Who cares? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.” Oh, obviously; girls, they want to have fun.

| Why Gwyneth loves Madonna | ||||||||||||||
Opposites do attract.Take homebody mom Gwyneth Paltrow and the ever controversial Madonna. They’re best pals, and in a new interview with OK!, Gwyn explains why.“She’s been through everything. And she’s a real survivor,” the Oscar winner said at a charity event in Los Angeles Wednesday night. “Every problem that I’ve had, she’s had ten problems worse that dwarf my problems.”The two stars have been close buds for a decade, with Paltrow publicly supporting Madonna through her divorce from Guy Ritchie, and rumors of her romance with then-married baseball star Alex Rodriguez.“She’s a very interested, caring woman,” Gwyneth said. “She’s pretty great. She’s Madonna and she comes with all this stuff but she’s pretty incredible.”

| Arianne Phillips on Mo | ||||||||||||||
Costume designer Arianne Phillips, the stylist behind "Blame it on Rio," has been collaborating with Madonna for more than a decade, from the star's geisha-inspired period to her Patty Hearst look for American Life. Phillips, who also masterminded the clothing for Madonna's two previous epic photo portfolios for W (2003's "Madonna Unbound" and 2006's "Madonna Rides Again"), talked to us about the looks she chose for their latest collaboration. The black zippered dress is so prominent in the story. What made you choose it and what did its designer (Victoria Beckham) have to do with it, if anything? | Mario Testino On Mo | ||||||||||||||
It was in 1997, for the cover of her album Ray of Light. ‘At 2pm she said, “OK, I’m tired. We’re done.” And I said, “But I don’t have the pictures yet.” She said, “You’re working for me and I say we’re done.” I said, “No, we carry on.” The picture she used on the cover came after that. She didn’t intimidate me, you see. I thought, I have to push my luck here, so I started keeking her like dis, with my foot.’ He gives me a demonstration, under the table. ‘She was, like, “Hey, what are you doing?” And I was, like, move here, move here,” and suddenly this created an eentimacy. When these people come across someone who treats them as an equal, it puts them at their ease.’ …
…What about when celebrities are notoriously controlling of their image – celebrities such as Madonna? ‘I was really lucky with Madonna because she was the first celebrity to come to me that wasn’t just a model. It was before Diana. With her I knew I had discovered my style because I like to believe what I am photographing. A certain reality. You know with digital you can do anything. I could be photographed sitting here with you and then in the lab you could be replaced with a pink elephant. When I started I wouldn’t do airbrushing but then I came to see it was OK for wrinkles but not everywhere, you know, leave the natural texture of the skin. When Madonna first came to meet me in a hotel I said, “My God, I have never seen you like this without make up!” Before, you know, I had only ever seen her being the tough girl, or Marilyn, or the rock chick. Instead she came in looking very natural, no make up, flat shoes and ponytail. So I said: “Can I photograph you like this? See who the Madonna without foundation is?” She agreed, but when I showed her the photographs before retouching she was, like, “Oh my God, people don’t want to see me like this.” I showed them to her again after I had done a little retouching and she was happy. She understood what I was trying to do without the make up. ‘That was a milestone for me. It was for a Versace couture collection, when Gianni was still alive, and when it came out it was billed as “Versace presents Madonna by Testino.” And I was a no one. Who is this Testino? Until then the only photographers known only by their surnames were Newton, Avedon and Bailey. It did change the way people saw me. I became a brand.’ (A powerful one, when Testino started shooting for Gucci in 1995, sales increased by £266 million in a year.) Madonna was so impressed with the natural look Testino had captured, she booked him again and again. ‘When Madonna got pregnant I was with her taking pictures of her tummy moving, while hundreds of photographers were outside, desperate for her.’

| Madonns surprises orphanage | ||||||||||||||
Madonna recently sent boxes of clothes belonging to her 3-year-old son, David Banda, back to his former orphanage in Malawi. The Home of Hope Orphanage Centre was a beehive of activity thanks to the arrival of the surprise package, labeled “from David Ritchie to friends at Home of Hope – Malawi.” Included in the boxes were clothes, children’s books – with autographed copies of Madonna’s children’s book, English Roses – and an assortment of toys. “These are clothes David can no longer use; they say he is quite a big boy now so he cannot use most of the clothes Madonna bought him immediately after he was adopted,” said a source close to the orphanage. “The children were excited to receive the clothes.” Lucy Chipeta, director of the orphanage, confirmed receiving a surprise package for the kids but would not confirm it came from Madonna. “We have lots of friends across the globe who send us stuff from time to time,” she said.
