  Ruling delayed to friday

A Malawi court official says Madonna won’t know until Friday whether she will be allowed to adopt a 4-year-old girl as her second child from the southern African nation.Court official Thomson Ligowe confirmed that Madonna’s adoption application has been adjourned by the court until the end of the week. The 50-year-old pop star appeared in court Monday and left about an hour later. It was not immediately known whether any of the girl’s relatives were present. The one adoption case on Monday’s court docket listed only the child’s name — Chifundo James. The girl’s name means “Mercy” in the local language.Madonna has not commented on the adoption and did not speak to reporters Monday morning.

The pop star, dressed in a black skirt and black high heels, entered the court house in the capital Lilongwe through a back door.Human rights campaigners claim she has used her "financial clout" to force the government to agree to the adoption of a four-year-old girl called Mercy James."The Malawian authorities have been bulldozed… by Madonna's money," said Mavuto Bamusi of the Human Rights Consultative Committee. Madonna flew into Lilongwe by private jet on Sunday and later visited a site where her charity Raising Malawi is planning to build a school for girls. She was accompanied by her eldest child Lourdes and the pair strolled hand-in-hand through the area near the village of Chinkhota - followed by a media posse.

6

The pop superstar ducked questions about her plans to adopt Mercy, saying only that it was "amazing" to be back in Malawi. At the age of 50, Madonna is unlikely to be considered a suitable adoptive parent in much of the world. But in Malawi she seems to have negotiated a way through what Mr Bamusi condemned as "weak adoption rules". Just over two years ago, she was given permission to take David Banda, then 18 months old, out of the country. This was despite the local regulations which require prospective adoptive parents to be monitored in Malawi for at least a year. Her adoption of David, now three, was finalised last year. Mercy is reportedly already being cared for by Madonna's staff at the luxury lodge where the pop star is staying, in the expectation that the adoption will be approved. The child's uncle is said to have agreed to the adoption. Both of her parents are thought to be dead. There are a million orphans in poverty-stricken Malawi, which has a population of just 14 million. Most of the children have lost their parents to Aids.

  Mo at Kumbali Country Lodge

Madonna and her entourage have taken over an entire safari lodge in Malawi this weekend as the singer prepares to adopt a second Malawian child. All 13 rooms of the Kumbali Country Lodge just outside Lilongwe have been booked by the star.

1

On its website, the lodge boasts nine executive rooms, each enclosed under ethnic thatch. All have en-suite bathrooms, TV, internet and a private balcony. It is not her first visit to the lodge. Madonna stayed there in 2006 when she adopted David Banda. The 620-hectare site with views of Nkhoma Mountain is owned and run by a couple who bought the plot from the Malawi government 10 years ago.It has a working dairy farm and a huge garden, and is popular with couples on honeymoon. The online hotel reviewer Trip Advisor has nothing but praise for Kumbali. It is understood the singer, who is 50, wants to adopt a second Malawian child, a four-year-old girl called Mercy James, following advice from Malawian friends. They are reported to have told her that David, who she adopted three years ago, would benefit from having a brother or sister.Mercy is reportedly the child of an unmarried teenage mother who died a month after she was born. Her father is still alive. The girl had been cared for by her uncle and grandmother but has more recently been staying at a children’s centre run by Madonna’s charity Raising Malawi.People close to the case say the girl’s relatives at first resisted the adoption but have now consented. But there may be problems because of Madonna’s divorce last year from British film director Guy Ritchie.Malawian law strongly favours adoptions by married couples. Each case is considered on individual merit. The star will have to prove she can raise the child alone.

Madonna, casually dressed with a white fedora, walked through the village of Chinkhota holding the hand of her 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes. Dozens of reporters looked on.The 50-year-old pop star refused to answer questions about reports that she was in Malawi to adopt a four-year-old girl. She said it was “amazing” to be back in the country where she runs a charity organization and from where she adopted her son David, 3, last year. Then she rushed away in a convoy of at least three sport utility vehicles, as crowds of shouting, waving children ran after her.A security guard with the convoy said Madonna was speaking to villagers about building a school there. She was seen looking at an artist’s impression of the proposed building. Hours earlier, Madonna landed at the airport in the capital of Lilongwe.Madonna was expected to appear in court Monday to sign adoption papers.

  Mo staff walk-out

Five of Madonna’s staff have walked out on her. The singer has been hit by the resignation of two personal assistants, two nannies and a chauffeur - who all cited long working hours as the reason for quitting.Upon handing in her notice to the ‘Miles Away’ singer earlier this week, Australian nanny Angela Jacobson was immediately told to leave.Another nanny, Elodie, who had worked alongside Angela looking after the singer’s three children - Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight and adopted David, three - has also quit. They are joined by personal assistants Denise Lambertson and Johanna Edholm, and chauffeur Alistair Mitchell, who was Madonna’s driver for seven years.Telling of her strain at being on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Angela, 29, wrote on her Facebook internet profile: ‘Not putting up with this s**t anymore. Never have, never will.
‘Standing up for my rights regardless of consequence. Sick of always being the one who compromises.’Angela, who was contracted to work until the end of June, is said to be shocked she was told to pack her bags almost immediately after revealing her plans to leave.A source told Britain’s People newspaper: ‘Angela was with her for two years and was particularly close to David. He and Rocco are devastated she is leaving.‘And Elodie, who’s been with Madonna for about 15 months, was also close to the children.‘But all Madonna’s employees work incredibly long hours.’Personal assistant Denise is due to finish working for the 50-year-old star this week, and Johanna quit saying she lost a boyfriend due to Madonna’s work demands. Alistair left Madonna to drive her ex-husband Guy Ritchie.
The walk-outs come as a huge blow to Madonna as she flies to Malawi, Southern Africa, today in a bid to adopt a new child. The singer has spent three months negotiating with authorities to adopt three year old female orphan, Mercy James, as a sister for David - who is also from Malawi. The singer has also taken on French nanny Audrey Wrightson

  I AM BECAUSE WE ARE

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE is now featured on Hulu.com.

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE, the remarkable documentary film by director Nathan Rissman and Raising Malawi co-founder Madonna, documents the extraordinary challenges faced by Malawian children in the wake of the AIDS pandemic.

While the film features appearances by Madonna, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and President Bill Clinton, its real stars are the spirited children whose stories so heart wrenchingly relate the complexities of life in the developing world.

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE has inspired audiences at film festivals worldwide with its message of interdependence and intrinsic connection between all peoples. Its title is derived from a concept in African spirituality which states that the very existence of any one of us is defined by the well-being of others.

After a successful featured run on The Sundance Channel, the film’s message of global interconnectedness now arrives at a very fitting venue on the worldwide web. Spread the word: I AM BECAUSE WE ARE enjoys a limited six-week online engagement at Hulu.com.

  Adoption " Confirmed"

Pop star Madonna is to travel to Malawi in a bid to adopt a baby girl called Mercy James, officials have said. The Reuters news agency was told that the child has "no father and mother, they both died", and an assessment was completed on Thursday. The 50-year-old is expected to arrive at the weekend and attend a procedural hearing at the High Court on Monday. The 14-month-old baby will be a sister to David Banda, the first child Madonna adopted from the African country. The official adoption of the little boy was confirmed last year. She brought the child back to the UK from an orphanage in the country in 2006. 'Role model' An official at the Malawian department of women and child welfare told the BBC's Raphael Tenthani that the pop star had already filed adoption papers and her case could be heard as early as next week. The official later told the Reuters news agency: "We expect her over the weekend or earlier than that... but without a doubt she is coming before the end of this month." Madonna's spokeswoman in New York, Liz Rosenberg, would not comment. Her lawyer in Malawi, Alan Chinula, also declined to comment. However, a US government official speaking under condition of anonymity told Reuters news agency that an adoption bid was under way. Writing in response to e-mailed questions from Nation readers last week, Madonna said: "Many people - especially our Malawian friends - say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister. "It's something I have been considering." Critics accused the Malawian government of sidestepping laws banning foreign adoptions in order to allow the celebrity to take 13-month-old David home with her. After the adoption was legalised, Madonna said the difficulties had arisen because "this adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi". She hoped it would make it easier for others to adopt from the country and explained: "I am the template or the role model, so to speak, for future adoptions." The star also has two biological children - Rocco, her son with former husband Guy Ritchie, and Lourdes, whose father is Carlos Leon. Film director Ritchie and Madonna's divorce was finalised in November. Malawi does not as a rule approve adoptions for single or divorced people, but the official at the country's welfare department said that each case was considered on merit.

  Mo going to Malawi

Madonna, who has said she may adopt another child from Malawi, may visit the southern African country in the next few days, a government official said on Thursday.
Officials said Madonna will bring her Malawian son David, whose adoption was controversial. Critics accused the government of skirting laws that ban non-residents from adopting children in Malawi, which has been badly hit by an AIDS epidemic.
"We expect her over the weekend or earlier than that...but without a doubt she is coming before the end of this month," the official at the Ministry of Gender and Child Development told Reuters.
The local Nation newspaper this month quoted Madonna as saying that Malawian friends had told her David needed a brother or sister and that she would consider adopting another child, but only with the support of the Malawian people.
David is growing up in the high-flying life of a global popstar, worlds away from his village of Lipunga, where his relatives eat staple food like maize meal from simple bowls and meals are cooked on open fires.
Madonna is expected to visit a site where her charity, Raising Malawi, will start building a multi-million dollar school for girls, the officials said.
David's father, Yohane Banda, told Reuters that he may see his son next week.
"Someone from Raising Malawi visited me last week and told me that my son may be visiting me sometime next week. I am delighted, I want to see my son," he said.
Madonna, who began adoption proceedings in 2006, took David when he was 13-months-old after his father had placed him in an orphanage following the death of his wife.
She has said he was happy to be involved in a case that might pave the way for more adoptions in Malawi. An estimated one million children in the country have been orphaned by AIDS.
Rights groups tried to block David's adoption, saying it would be illegal.
Child rights activist John Soo Phiri said Madonna may find it more difficult to adopt another child as a single parent after her divorce from film director Guy Ritchie.
"She will have to prove that as a single parent she still has the abilities to raise another child alone," said child rights activist John Soo Phiri.

  No Mo at Glastonbury

Farmer MICHAEL EAVIS has vowed never to allow a pop star to headline Glastonbury festival - insisting not even MADONNA is invited to perform at the famed British music event.
Eavis sparked outrage when he veered from tradition by recruiting rapper Jay-Z to take to the main stage at the famously rock ‘n’ roll gig in England last year (08).
And despite once offering Kylie Minogue a headlining slot in 2005 - which she axed after she was diagnosed with breast cancer - the organiser insists he will never again sign a pop act for his shows.
He says, “I don’t think we’ll ever go down the pop route for getting a headliner for Glastonbury. Madonna hasn’t even been asked by us.”
And Eavis admits he feared the 2008 festival would be the last - until he managed to hire Bruce Springsteen for the upcoming 2009 extravaganza in June (09).
He adds, “Last year I thought that maybe we’d got to the end and we’d have to bite the bullet and fold it all up… I was prepared to walk away. But to come back from the dead of last year to sell out this year is amazing. Getting Springsteen as a headliner is so exciting. I saw him play two-and-a-half hours in Cardiff and that’s what turned me on to the idea of having him. I was so blown out by him I had to make it happen.”

  Interview RTL

Madonna Interview in English March 23rd

  Mallawi goes personal

The Daily News' Laura Schreffler spent some time on the phone with Africa this week, and managed to find the one Malawian bureaucrat who is not thrilled to have Madonna's fame and aid directed that country's way. Recently there have been reports that the Material Mom might adopt another baby to add to her brood (and to no doubt irritate young David Banda, who probably assumed that for at least a couple of years, he was going to be the only ethnic baby in the house not having sex with Madonna). But the Malawi official who got on the phone with the News says "don't count your African orphans before they hatch":
"Our official policy is that we do not encourage our children to be sent into broken homes," said a senior official from Malawi's Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Development, noting her split from hubby Guy Ritchie ... "The news she is linked to another woman's husband and a young man less than half her age makes us question her morals."

Wait. The fact that she got a perfectly legal and amicable divorce and started dating new people is morally questionable? Not the fact that she posed for and published her own hard-core porn book called Sex, was briefly a lesbian, made a music video where she hooked up with Jesus, and generally made millions for decades by selling smut? That didn't stop Malawi from handing over a baby, but a couple of months of misguidedly humping a big orange baseball player in private did?

  Jesus on cheating

Pop star Madonna's new man Jesus Luz claims he did not cheat on her with a lingerie model as his mother was close by. Luz agreed that he danced with model Luciano Costa at a party in his native Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but affirms she is just a "friend". He said: "I danced with her, but I danced with everyone at the party. My mum was at my side [at the party] and never would I become intimate with a woman if my mum was nearby—even if I was interested in that person." Luz was photographed embracing Costa as they danced. He claims his mother Christiane was close by, but she wasn't. Luz and Costa were photographed the next day walking hand in hand in a park. He said: "I have nothing with Luciana. The next day I met her on the beach and greeted her normally. The press created this story. Even if it is true that I am with her, I would never reveal these details. I was never one to comment on my personal life and that won't change now. This is a characteristic of my personality."

  Mo lands close to A-Roid

We have word that Madonna has landed in Wellington, Fla sans her boy-whatever Jesus Luz. Perhaps he was traveling back in coach undetected? Or did the youngster who has been attached at the queen’s hip for sometime decide not to make the trek down south?Or was he just not invited? After all, Florida is the notorious place of love for Madge and her former fling Alex Rodriguez (Asteroidriguez). Even A-Rod dished to Detalis magazine that they first met 12 years ago down there. “I was trying to buy her house, and I couldn’t afford it,” the cheater admits. “We’re friends. She’s an amazing entertainer. I have a lot of respect for her.”Speaking of the Details shoot, when M was in Wellington for an equestrian meet a few weeks ago she was there with photographer Steven Klein. SK just happened to be the one who shot A-Rod for his spread in the mag down in FL also a couple weeks ago. Rendezvous coincidence? We think not.Isn’t that just precious? We totally see M going back to this douche at some point. All possessive bitches want to be in control, and since A.R. had been trying to “make it work” with his wife, we’re sure it was not pleasing Madonna. Jesus is so just a good-bodied distraction right now. He has to be with a gay name like that, right? Stay tuned for A and M round three.Oh, and I hear M’s looking at real estate there, again. Does something keep pulling you there, babycakes?
