  Home in Malawi

MADONNA is hoping to build a home in Malawi despite her application to adopt three-year-old local MERCY JAMES being refused.
Last week a judge turned down her bid to become the girl’s legal mother because Madge hadn’t lived in the country for 18 months.

Nevertheless, the chart-topper has instructed her architects to draw up plans for a home in the African country, as she believes adopted son DAVID BANDA would benefit from a connection to his birthplace.

I’m told: “Madonna has a big, beautiful plot of land over there already. She’s planning to build a girl’s school in the Chinkhota village and those designs are well under way.

“But she’s gone back to the designers and asked if they could accommodate a family home on the plot or on adjacent land.

Not-so-Material Girl Madonna pledged $500,000 for victims of Italy's terrible earthquake on Wednesday - 10 times what the U.S. government sent.
The mayor of Pacentro, the Abruzzi mountain village where Madonna Ciccone's paternal grandparents were born, reached out to the pop star, who is practically a holy icon in town, and begged for help.
Fernando Caparso, mayor of the medieval village of 1,300 souls about 60 miles from the epicenter of Monday's quake, said the singer quickly called with her generous offer.
'I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are from,' Madonna told People magazine.
Caparso called it 'a beautiful thing' and a big help for the people of the devastated regional capital L'Aquila.
On Monday, the US State Department announced it was sending $50,000 in emergency relief funds, in two words "cheap bastards".

Hopping into a blacked-out Audi left, the Material Girl was whisked away to an office building around Knightsbridge, where she stayed for two hours before heading back home. It’s thought that Madge was visiting a lawyer to check in on her adoption appeal for baby Chifundo (Mercy) James - whom she was denied by the courts during a triup to Malawi last weekend.“I can’t believe I’m leaving my beautiful baby behind,” Madge reportedly said at the time. “It’s not right. I love that baby girl ... she needs to be with me.”

  Mercy cries "Mummy"

The Malawian child not allowed to be adopted by Madonna has been begging to see her new "mummy".

Mercy James, four, was sent back to her orphanage bewildered and screaming for the pop star.

The 50-year-old singer and her children Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight, and David, three, flew back to Britain last night after her bid to give Mercy a new home was rejected.
The little girl was crying when she said goodbye to her "new family" and couldn't understand why they were leaving her.

The head of Kondanani Children's Home Annie Chikhwaza said: "It's devastating for Mercy. She had bonded with her new family and was calling for Madonna, saying, 'Where is my mummy?'

"She couldn't understand where Lola, David and Rocco had gone - she thought they were playing hide and seek. It broke my heart to see her crying out for David as they'd become inseparable.

"Madonna said she will do whatever it takes to get her back."

The 4 Minutes singer and her children flew in Luton Airport where they were met by her former husband Guy Ritchie.

The star - who looked teary and forlorn as she left the plane - has already lodged an appeal against the adoption ruling and hopes the process will begin as early as today.

A source at Kumbali Lodge Hotel, located in the Malawian capital Lilongwe, said Madonna spent more than an hour talking to Mercy before she left the country.

The source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Madonna was up at dawn cradling Mercy, gently soothing her and making her laugh.

"You could see how upset she was when she had to say goodbye. She could barely wrench herself away."

High Court Judge Esme Chombo ruled Madonna was ineligible to adopt Mercy last week because she had not lived in the country for 18 months.

The singer was reportedly shocked by the decision as her plans had been endorsed by the African country's government.

Meanwhile, Guy, 40, has jumped to his ex-wife's defence calling her "a great mother".

A family friend: "Madonna was incredibly touched. He's been an unexpected source of strength."

After returning to Britain on Friday, Madonna left her children with their father Guy Ritchie so she can adjust to the Malawi’s judge’s shock decision. Her meal out came as she revealed she had donated money to the victims of the Italian earthquake. Madonna has donated a reported $500,000 to her father Silvio Ciccone’s home region of Abruzzo. Over 200 people have been injured and thousands left homeless after a 6.3 magnitude quake on Monday. The singer declined to confirm how much she had given, but said: ‘I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are fromMadonna sought comfort from friend Stella McCartney earlier this week after jetting back to the UK from the African country.

  "I´m happy to help"

When a devastating earthquake struck the Abruzzo region of Italy on Monday, the mayor of the hamlet of Pacentro made an appeal for help to the granddaughter of two former townspeople. The following morning, that granddaughter responded in a big way.Madonna, whose paternal grandparents lived in Pacentro until 1919, made a “substantial donation” for the relief effort following the 6.3 magnitude quake that left more than 200 dead, says her publicist Liz Rosenberg. The rep wouldn’t give the amount, but a source says it’s about $500,000.“I am happy to lend a helping hand to the town that my ancestors are from,” Madonna tells PEOPLE. “My heart goes out to the families that have lost loved ones or their homes.”

Madonna headed out to dinner at Cecconi's in London last night with her friend Stella McCartney, who helped console the heartbroken singer. Madonna's failed adoption of 3-year-old Mercy in Malawi last week must still be a bit of a shock, though she already has the support of loved ones like Guy Richie. Now seemingly out of nowhere, Mercy's young biological father emerged saying he didn't know his daughter was alive and that he wants to support her. Madonna was under the impression the child was an orphan so this must be another devastating blow and could make her appeal more difficult.Madonna with Stella McCartney at the Cecconi Restaurant in London (April 06 2009).
