  Mo Interview On Teen-Vogue

Madonna gave an exclusive interview about the "Material Girl" Line for Teen Vogue.

1

Madonna has met her match. With the material mom’s new fashion line, daughter Lourdes calls the shots.

Word of warning to anyone looking to congratulate Madonna on her new line, Material Girl: “I didn’t really do anything,” the pop icon insists. “I couldn’t even say it was a collaboration. It was 90 percent Lola. I needed a teenage daughter to kick me in the butt and go, ‘Let’s do this, Mom!’” she adds, laughing. Supporting act isn’t a role we’re used to seeing Madonna play, but in the case of her thirteen-year-old daughter, Lourdes Leon, she seems perfectly happy taking a backseat. “I respect her style,” Madonna says. “It’s a juniors’ line. That’s who she is.” Of course, when your mom has a fashion archive as rich as Madonna’s, you’d be crazy not to take a peek. “She steals from my closet all the time–whether she’s allowed to or not,” Madonna says. “She loves everything I wore in the eighties. Her thing is to bring it into the twenty-first century–to add her own twist.” The line carries certain unmistakable Madonna signatures–like lace, pearls, and cross motifs–but other pieces fly over Mom’s head. Take the leggings with intentional tears inspired by a Lourdes styling trick. “Lola will leave in the morning with a pair of tights on,” explains Madonna. “Then when she comes home, they’re all ripped. I’m like, ‘What happened?’ And she goes, ‘I did it on purpose, Mom.’ OK, then,” Madonna says with a shrug. After three decades of shocking and awing us with her costume changes, it looks like fashion’s favorite chameleon has found a worthy successor.

Jane Keltner de Valle: You’re such an enduring style icon. Why did you wait until now to launch a fashion line?
Madonna:
I guess I needed a teenage daughter to kick me in the butt and say, “Let’s do this, Mom!” There’s so much competition out there, and I work with so many great, talented designers. I didn’t really feel like I had a specific voice or an opinion until my daughter became a teenager, and then it became very clear what direction we were gonna go in. Lola’s direction!

Jane Keltner de Valle: How would you describe her style and how has she influenced your style?
Madonna:
Her style is definitely more edgy. She has much more sense of humor about the way she dresses. She doesn’t take herself so seriously. She dresses in a very effortless way, which is something that I admire and wish I could do more of. She’s also 13 years old, so everything looks good on her! But yeah, she reminds me that getting dressed-up is actually fun. It’s been so much a part of my work that I sometimes forget to, like, have fun with it. So she’s reminding me that it’s fun.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Do you give her complete freedom to wear what she wants?
Madonna:
No, I do not. Absolutely not!

Jane Keltner de Valle: What are the ground rules?
Madonna:
Sometimes she puts something on, and I’ll be like, “My god, that looks amazing!” And then I’ll go, “Oh my god, that’s my 13 year old daughter.” So, um, no, we have rules. She can wear make up when she goes to parties and special events. And ya know, there’s always a little bit of a discussion about how short the skirt is…or is there some cleavage showing. And I always say to her, do you want everybody to be staring at your breasts, or do you want people to talk to you?

Jane Keltner de Valle: Does she raid your closet a lot, and is she allowed to?
Madonna:
She steals things all the time–whether she’s allowed to or not. There are always things missing in my closet!

Jane Keltner de Valle: What does she think of your style now, and of some of your iconic looks from the past?
Madonna:
She loves everything I wore in the early 80’s. She likes to take from that and make her own statement. Her thing now is to take what was my first thing and bring it into the 21st century–add her own twist to it. She’s also very influenced by dance. She’s a dancer, and she’s influenced by what kids wear in her classes. Ya know, the layered thing and the legwarmers. She’ll leave in the morning with a pair of tights on, ands when she comes home they’re all ripped and run and torn. I’m like, “What happened to your tights?” And she goes, “I did it on purpose, mom.” “Ok then.”

Jane Keltner de Valle: She takes after her mom.
Madonna:
Exactly.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Do you ever raid her closet?
Madonna:
Um, yeah. I wear her shoes a lot. We wear the same size, so when I’m really sick of wearing these [shows me her Christian Dior platforms]. She’s got some really cool flat boots and I steal her Converse sneakers.

Jane Keltner de Valle: So tell me how you approached this collection. How did the collaboration work?
Madonna:
I would say it was 90% Lola. I couldn’t even really say it’s a collaboration because she’s doing a lot more than I am. I didn’t really do anything. I respect her style. It’s for a junior line, and that’s who she is. We share some common things, but then there are things that she wears that I would never wear. I mean, I don’t wear leggings and t-shirts. That’s not my thing. But that’s Lola’s thing.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Why did you decide to name it Material Girl and not Madonna.
Madonna:
Because naming it after me is boring. First of all, that’s my name, and I don’t think Lola would have been as interested in working on it. Material Girl isn’t necessarily about me. People connect that name to me, but it’s really about a kind of a girl, and it has a lot of different connotations. So I think Lola feels like she can make it her own.

Jane Keltner de Valle: How would you describe the girl the collection is for?
Madonna:
She’s not afraid to take chances. She’s adventurous, has a sense of humor, is witty, clever, interested in what’s going on in the world, she reads books, likes music, likes to dance–loves to dance!–and is as in touch with her masculine side as she is with her feminine side.

Jane Keltner de Valle: The two of you are both very strong-minded. Was it easy working together? Did you ever clash?
Madonna:
Once in a while. But I have to say, when it comes to fashion and style, it’s the one area we argue the least in. Practicing piano, giving the little kid a bath, cleaning-up the bedroom–those are the things we don’t agree on.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Do you have any favorite pieces from the collection?
Madonna:
I like just about anything that has lace on it. There’s a little lace hoodie with a metallic zipper on it that I’m obsessed with. I’m gonna steal it after this interview’s over with. And I love all the jewelry. The necklaces, all the chains…

Jane Keltner de Valle: How important was it to keep the prices accessible?
Madonna:
Extremely important. Lola wanted to create a line that she could afford, and that girls across the country could afford. She wasn’t interested in making something so exclusive that only 50 girls could wear it.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Does Lourdes have a clothing allowance?
Madonna:
She has no allowance. If she wants to go shopping I basically say, ‘Ok, well you have to do x, y, and z…” She has to earn it. If she’s done really well in school, and gotten really good grades in all her classes, a reward is usually $50 to go to American Apparel or Topshop, and go mad.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Do you two go shopping together?
Madonna:
She doesn’t like me to go shopping with her. No.

Jane Keltner de Valle: Will you and she star in the campaign together?
Madonna:
I won’t. I think she will eventually. After she gets into high school, and gets good grades. I’m using it as leverage!

Jane Keltner de Valle: Does she want to follow in your footsteps in other arenas, like music or film?
Madonna:
She’s majoring in drama. That’s her main area of interest. She’s also really interested in dance. She doesn’t want to be a singer, though. She’s made that very clear. That’s cool. I respect that.

Jane Keltner de Valle: How do you feel about her going into the entertainment industry?
Madonna:
I’m fine with it as long as she takes it seriously and puts in the hours. I always say to her, “If you want to be good at anything, you have to put in the hours.” She might get some things handed to her because of her connection with me, but she doesn’t really want that. She wants to earn it. She’s made that very clear to me.

Dear Franco,

Only two words seem appropriate right now: Thank you.

When Madonna pledged to match your contributions to Raising Malawi, we never dreamed you would be this generous. We set an ambitious goal of $150,000 -- or so we thought -- and hoped for the best.

Simply put: we smashed our goal. Donations have poured in from our supporters around the world totaling more than $550,000 -- and with Madonna's match, our total amount raised is well over one million dollars.

Show your friends that you are partnering with Madonna by using one of the icons below as your Facebook or Twitter image:

Mo & Obama on the Philippines?

US President Barack Obama and Queen of Pop are reportedly coming to the Philippines. That’s according to socialite and TV host Tim Yap, who first shared the scoop on Twitter.

Though Tim did not cite where he got the scoop, but from the way it was tweeted, it’s very much certain to happen. “Okay, here’s a SCOOP.And again, you heard it FIRST FROM ME. You know who’s coming to Manila before the year ends? Obama AND Madonna,” he said.

Notice that there’s an emphasis on the word “AND”. Does it mean they’re coming together?
Together or not, it’s indeed so much of a blessing to have Obama and Madonna here in the Philippines.

Obama’s visit will be for sure political-related but for Madonna, it’seither she’ll stage a concert or she’ll be here talking about child advocacy.

  Extras on W.E.

Members of the London Welsh Centre have rushed for the chance to be cast as extras in a film directed by Madonna.

W.E., explores two parallel love stories, including that of Edward VIII and the American divorcee for whom he abdicated in 1936, Wallis Simpson. It is understood one scene features Edward's shock at living conditions in Welsh mining villages. The movie, co-written by Madonna, will be her first full-length feature as director.

Shooting for W.E. - which started this week - takes place in the UK, France and the US. The opportunity to appear in a Madonna film attracted plenty of interest from London Welsh Centre members. A spokesperson for the centre, which was contacted by a casting agency, said: "I've had about 15 phone calls this morning, and yesterday was bedlam because everybody wants to be in a film with Madonna."

The centre said Welsh-speakers were needed as extras to create scenes based on Edward's visits to the south Wales valleys in the 1930s. Edward toured Welsh mining communities during his reign, and is said to have been sympathetic to the miners and their families, exclaiming: "Something must be done". This was said to have caused unease in government circles with his comments interpreted as interference in political matters. Edward is the only British sovereign to abdicate voluntarily, when he stepped down to marry Simpson. This was because as king and supreme governor of the Church of England, he could not marry a divorcee.

It caused a personal and political storm which caused a crisis in the monarchy. However, the relationship of Edward and Simpson is only part of the film's plot. W.E. features a modern-day parallel story in which Australian actress Abbie Cornish plays a New Yorker who becomes obsessed with Edward's decision to abdicate for his lover. Madonna has also cast James Fox to play King George V, and his son Laurence Fox as Bertie, Edward's younger brother. Andrea Riseborough, who played former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in BBC drama The Long Walk to Finchley, will play Simpson. British star James D'Arcy, who starred opposite Billie Piper in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, has been cast as Edward VIII.

  Mo seeks museum help

A wedding outfit on show at a Scottish museum is to take a starring role in a film being directed by Madonna. She has asked for the dress for her directorial feature debut, W.E., about Edward VIII's wife Wallis Simpson. The outfit is currently part of a Marriage in the Movies exhibition at the National Museum of Costume at Shambellie House near Dumfries. The dress was worn by Joely Richardson, who starred in the 2005 television production Wallis and Edward. The outfit was designed by Michael O'Connor and will be worn by actress Andrea Riseborough, who will play Wallis Simpson in the film co-written by Madonna. National Museums Scotland has agreed to release the dress, which had been due to remain on display until October this year. It will be sent to the film set on Monday. National Museum of Costume general manager Margaret Roberts said they had been happy to send the dress to Madonna. Our Marriage in the Movies exhibition is packed with fabulous gowns that tell a story not only about the history of the period they represent, but also of Hollywood glamour and style,' she said. 'This is a dress that was made for the movies, so when we received the request from Madonna's production company, we were only too happy to oblige.' Marriage in the Movies runs until 31 October.

ABBIE CORNISH, ANDREA RISEBOROUGH, JAMES D’ARCY OSCAR ISAAC, RICHARD COYLE, JAMES FOX AND LAURENCE FOX JOIN “W.E”

Madonna’s Directorial Feature Debut to start Principal Photography on 5th July
Based on an original screenplay, “W.E”, a film written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian is set to begin shooting this summer in Europe (UK and France) and the US.
“W.E” tells two parallel love stories separated by more than six decades. Acclaimed actress Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, Bright Star, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) has been cast in the role of Wally Winthrop – a young married New Yorker in 1998 who is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate romantic love story, King Edward V111’s abdication for his love of Wallis Simpson. Andrea Riseborough has been cast in the role of Wallis Simpson. Riseborough is best known for her outstanding Bafta Nominated performance of Margaret Thatcher in the acclaimed BBC drama “The Long Walk to Finchley” and will soon be seen in Brighton Rock. British star James D’Arcy (Master and Commander, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) will play the part of Edward VIII. Wally Winthrop”s Russian love interest Evgeni will be played by rising star Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) and her husband William will be played by Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). Art imitates life as the revered British acting dynasty provides father and son, James Fox (Sherlock Holmes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bafta nominated A Passage to India, Bafta winner The Servant) and Laurence Fox (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Becoming Jane) in the roles of King George V and his son, Bertie.

1936 England - Wallis Simpson, an American woman, captured the heart of King Edward VIII. Already divorced and married to her second husband when she met Edward, then the Prince of Wales in London, the two fell in love. However, once crowned, Edward was told by the Church and the Prime Minister that he could not marry Wallis and remain King… He abdicated, giving up the throne to be with the woman he loved. Once married and known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, they lived out what many considered to be the romance of the century.
1998 N.Y - Wally Winthrop has a troubled past and moves to New York from the South to work in Sotheby’s Estate department. She gives up her job to marry a successful psychiatrist but the marriage is unhappy and Wally finds herself bored, frustrated and often alone. She seeks refuge in her obsession with what she believes to be the ultimate romantic love story, King Edward VIII ‘s abdication for his love of Wallis Simpson. When Wally discovers that there is going to be an auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s Estate at Sotheby’s, she takes the opportunity to return to her old hunting ground to try to understand the nature of the great love affair through the artifacts that once belonged to the couple. While at Sotheby’s, Wally meets Evgeni, a Russian security guard, with a mysterious past. As she immerses herself deeper into the love story of Wallis and Edward, while spending more time away from her marriage, she finds herself falling in love.
We travel back and forth in time with Wally and Wallis, two fragile but determined women whose lives become inextricably linked. However, as the story unravels it becomes apparent that Wallis Simpson’s life was not as perfect as Wally had thought.
The film will be produced by Colin Vaines (producer Coriolanus, exec producer London Boulevard,  The Gangs of New York and The Young Victoria) with Executive Producers Kris Thykier (producer The Debt,  Kick-Ass, Harry Brown, exec producer Stardust) and Nigel Wooll (exec producer Miss Potter, co-producer GI Jane, White Squall). The production team include Production Designer Martin Childs (Oscar Winner Shakespeare in Love, Oscar Nominated Quills, The Boy in Striped Pyjamas), Director of Photography, Hagen Bogdanski (The Lives of Others, The Young Victoria), Costume Designer, Arianne Phillips (Oscar Nominated Walk the Line, Bafta Nominated A Single Man) and Hair and Make Up Designer - Jenny Shircore (Oscar Winner Elizabeth, Bafta Winner and Oscar Nominated The Young Victoria).

  Madonna casts Dormer

Much missed since her death in 2002, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother is to be subjected to a radical new portrayal by Madonna. Mandrake can disclose that the American singer has cast an actress who appeared naked as Anne Boleyn in the television series The Tudors to perform the role of Queen Elizabeth in a film that she is making about the Edward VIII abdication crisis.

"This country tends to remember the Queen Mother as a rather wrinkly 97 year-old, but I am playing her when she was quite an enchanting, engaging twenty and thirtysomething," Natalie Dormer told me. "She was quite a savage and savvy game player-

The "Queen of Pop" is understood to be portraying Queen Elizabeth as a highly negative influence in W.E., which is sympathetic to Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American socialite, who caused a constitutional dilemma when the king declared his desire to marry her.

Dormer, who was speaking at a party to mark the 100th anniversary of Elizabeth Arden, the cosmetics firm patronised by Queen Elizabeth, said: "She never really spoke in public – she left it up to her husband, the king, and, therefore, even if she was a dominant force in the marriage, and a rock and forward thinker, she always let the king take the lead. She never took any credit for it."

Madonna has long been fascinated by the 1936 crisis, which was resolved by Edward's abdication and his succession by his brother, George VI, who was the present Queen's father. Edward was given the title the Duke of Windsor and he married Simpson.

In May, the singer said: "People have accused Wallis of all kinds of things. They've said that she put a spell on Edward. They've said that she was a hermaphrodite and that he was gay. They've said they were Nazi sympathisers. It's just the usual lynch-mob mentality that descends upon somebody who has something that lots of other people don't have."

Mandrake reported in March that Madonna would ask the Queen for filming on W.E. to be allowed in royal palaces.

Dormer, 28, whose ancestor is Jane Dormer, a lady in waiting to Queen Mary, is used to controversy after starring in The Tudors, which was criticised for its historical inaccuracies.

Madonna's film has already undergone several changes. The latest is that Margo Stilley, who appeared in the sexually explicit film 9 Songs, has left. "I had the role, but we had artistic differences," said the American actress.

Stilley added of Madonna: "She is really something. I wish the cast luck because they are all really talented."

1

Madonna talks about the collection for Macy's Madonna collaborates with her daughter on collection.

1

WWD just released the first images of the Material Girl collection, which Lourdes Leon helped style and were photographed last month in a studio and on the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

1

The centerpiece of the marketing campaign supporting the launch is not Madonna, but a young television actress and singer who’s identity has not yet been revealed. Her identity will be revealed in the coming weeks closer to the launch date.

1

Madonna told WWD:

“It’s not complicated. It’s dressing in layers. It’s not looking like you took too much time thinking about what you’re wearing. She’s been coming to meetings pretty much from the very beginning. My role was really to make sure we were all going in the right direction and it was a line that I could stand behind and be proud of and feel good about - and one that she could also feel represented her. I really like the way Lola dresses, and I think this line is absolutely an extension of her taste.”

Asked to sum up the Material Girl customer, Madonna described her in this way:

“A Material Girl is a girl that is interested in fashion and interested in music and interested in fun. [She has] a sense of humor [and] is an adventurous human being.”
